Now Listening to: Gentleman by Psy
I'm not a big fan of music. If you looked at my iTunes you'd realize I a) barely have any music, and b) most of it is old and never listened to. You know, it's full of those old club banger and gangster rap songs that I listened to as a high school-er.
Not that any of it is bad. I'm probably just too cheap to buy music. OK, I'm too cheap to buy music and I don't want to illegally download it. I like to abide by the laws.
It's All The Same
On top of that music sounds the same anymore. I can't tell if it's pop, country, or rock. It all sounds the same. You could easily categorize Taylor Swift as all 3 of those so why would I want to take the time to pick out what songs fit where.
And don't get me started on "alternative" rock. It's not alternative rock, it's the only mainstream rock we get. Train, Nickleback, 30 Seconds to Mars...they can all be categorized as rock. Yet one is considered more "alternative" than the others, but why?
It's not like one sounds more alternative than the others. It's mainstream rock. Is it because Modern Country is traditional Rock? They all have similar sounds, there's no sense in categorizing them differently. Look, if you are a Country fan know that you'd like traditional rock. And, chances are, if you like Rock you also like Alternative Rock.
What's Good Music
My parents frequently ask me this question, "what kind of music do you like if it all sounds the same?"
That's actually an easy answer. I listen to music that tells a story or could easily fit the current moment in my life. While songs by the likes of Skrillex don't really tell me a story, they make me feel good. They give me energy and pump me up. It's the perfect song when something important is about to happen or when I'm feeling down.
I also like music that, while I'm driving and thinking, I'd hear if my life were a movie. I'll sit in a car, riding as a passenger obviously, and stare out the window with the song in my head that would be playing if it were a movie.
I love those songs, there needs to be more of them.
Maybe There's a Reason There Isn't
What if we didn't hear more music we liked for a reason? What if music were like people and relationships? Some are OK, some are great, and others just flat out stink. That one special song is like that special person who means more and is more exciting than any others. It's like your best friend and best friends can come and go, just like good music can come and go.
Maybe music represents our life. Maybe we like a song better because of how it represents our current time in life. For me, Skrillex could be the music I need find energy and motivation.
For you, Taylor Swift's "22" might remind you to act like you're mature, but not like your an old person who wishes to no longer have fun.
For other's it could be a new Fall Out Boy song or any other band that represents our life at that current moment.
It's Our Life's Soundtrack
It all makes sense doesn't it?
Music is our soundtrack, and we are the director. What we like depends on how it makes us feel and how it changes our life. Some of us relate to a song better than someone else does, but there's emotions tied to it.
As our emotions go up and down, our musical tastes change. As our life changes so does the music we listen to. This is why we like different things. It's why no one will ever like the exact same music no matter how similar they are.
Music represents us. It is us, and only we can feel the emotions that the music produces.
Next time your favorite song comes on the radio, consider the emotions it brings out in you. Only then will you realize why it's your favorite song.
Oh, and remember, you are the conductor to the Soundtrack of Your Life.
