Finally Over
My internship ended the weekend of my birthday. It was the GREATEST BIRTHDAY PRESENT EVER! On top of that my local Blockbuster was closing, so I got to take some of that pay I earned to get some super cheap games. And if you know me, super cheap games are my kind of thing.
I went home and enjoyed the Little Italy Parade with my girlfriend at that time. The next day I got some sweet Ichiban, but this is where the true questions began.
Once the internship was all over I began job searching. I had a plan. It was work a part time job for 6 months and look for something bigger, get my way up in the charts of parks or recreation. It didn't work though. No one was hiring, no one was interviewing, and my career field was dying.
First Job Out of College
I was scared to death. Finally a friend of mine hooked me up with a job at Walmart. It wasn't a great job but it paid me. After about a month there they told me they were trying to push me up to management. I didn't really want to go that path because Walmart doesn't necessarily treat their employees well. However, at the time I agreed to it because I simply wanted to make more money.
Soon though I began to take a lot of heat for what my coworkers and supervisors were doing. They were being lazy, they weren't getting the job done, and I was being blamed for it. I hated it and I found a new job that didn't pay as well but also didn't make me work 6-7 days a week.
Substitute Teacher
Of all the jobs in the world, I chose Substitute Teaching. After about 2 weeks of doing it, I was in love. I found something I enjoyed and I thought about staying in the field. Over that summer I looked into going back to school and getting on the path to becoming a teacher, but it was a scary path as my mom always reminded me how much being a teacher was a bad gig these days.
She works until 6-7 pm nightly as a public school teacher. She's in her 15th year now and works very hard at her job, unfortunately now the State of Indiana has told teachers they'll never get a raise again. What kind of a profession is that? Even McDonald's gives raises. I couldn't do it.
I continued to substitute teach though while looking for work. In March of 2012, while substitute teaching in 5th grade at Rosedale Elementary, I met a girl who took my breathe away. In fact I couldn't stop thinking about her. Even though I had a girlfriend at the time, I ran home and checked Facebook. I had to know all I could about this girl, especially if she had a boyfriend.
She was the Student Teacher by the way, I'm sure some of you are thinking I'm a creeper. Trust me, I'm not. And, by the way, her profile didn't tell anything because after asking her to have a drink with me that evening and going, I found out she was engaged.
Wow...my life just keeps getting crazier right? Well not so much it could get a lot crazier.
So we enjoyed our evening together and we hit it off well. I woke up the next morning to have breakfast with my mom and called her immediately. We texted all weekend and while I had the stomach flu the following Monday, she called and checked on me throughout the evening.
I realized at this point I was in the wrong relationship and got out of it. I spent the next few weeks considering my options. I enjoyed being a free man, but there were reasons to get involved quick and I did.
